Important Note on Couples Therapy & Insurance
Couples therapy is not typically considered a covered service by most insurance plans. In some cases, services may be billed under family therapy codes (CPT 90846 or 90847); however, this requires prior approval from your insurance provider.
If you plan to use insurance for couples therapy, it is your responsibility to contact your provider in advance and request written confirmation that these CPT codes will be accepted for this type of service.
Please note that when insurance is used in this way, one member of the couple must be identified as the “identified patient,” and a mental health diagnosis may be required if clinical criteria are met. This can impact how services are documented and billed.
If you have questions about this process, I’m happy to discuss it further during your consultation.
